Vecchia Napoli is celebrating the baking of the 30,000 Calzone Capo di Monte since opening its doors in November 2008. Despite being the costliest pizza on the menu this calzone is also the most popular one, outselling all time favourites Pizza Margherita and Pizza Capricciosa.
Named after the royal palace of Naples famed for its elaborate and richly worked splendour, Calzone Capodimonte is indeed a Pizza fit for kings. Baked in the more traditional elongated shape of the closed pizza, the interior contains a melted blend of some of Italy’s finest cheeses; Mozzarella Fior di Latte, Parmigiano Reggiano, Fontina and Italico, delicately flavoured with a cream of Funghi Porcini and Tartufo Nero and chopped Trevisano red lettuce for freshness and crunch. As a final light touch, J, thin slices of Parma ham, Grana Padano shavings and Rucola leaves are spread over the exterior. The pastry dough is kneaded to Vecchia Napoli’s well guarded recipe which combines four different grades of flour especially sourced from Mulino Caputo in Naples.
Vecchia Napoli will be celebrating the success of its signature Pizza by offering complimentaries to many of its loyal customers and by way of competitions on its fb page. Boys from St. Patrick’s school in Sliema will also be treated to supper one evening.
One returning client described his Capo di Monte experience as “this is as close as one gets to heaven……….divine.”
